“We have a choice between the physician that we know or a physician that is awake. Up to now, we have chosen the physician that we know. The data suggests we are better off choosing the physician that is awake.” (Reference Lost)

"Never argue with the data." (Sheen in Jimmy Neutron )

I see how the principle might be extended. We have had a choice between the deity that we know and the deity that is awake. Up to now, we have chosen the deity that we know. The data suggest we are better off choosing the deity that is awake.

I mean, if we are going to be regularly throwing a Surprise Party for our Invisible Friend, we might as well choose wisely, starting, perhaps, with an Invisible Friend who actually likes us---maybe laughing at us, not particularly careful of us, and being way, way brighter than we could ever hope to be, but still, more on our side than interested in controlling us, brutalizing us, and tormenting us for minor infractions. (Isn't it remarkable that most characterizations of god by 'his children' are of a kind that if we observed the same behaviors in an actual human parent, we would run and not walk to rescue their children from them, forever? Why do we tolerate in our gods behavior we do not praise in our own kind?)

The principle that starts this posting, with appropriate substitutions, could turn out to apply to so very much: Politicians, Planners, Prophets, Profiteers, Pundits, Philosophers, Pilots (Sky and Terrestrial), Potters, and finally, People Who List Vocations And Avocations Starting With The Letter “P”...

We have a choice between the _______ that we know, or a _______ that is awake. Up to now, we have chosen the _______ that we know. The data suggests we are better off choosing the _______ that is awake.
